In the PAL and non-Greatest Hits versions of the game, all speedways share the same theme, although the first three speedways are given new themes in the Greatest Hits version. Completing each challenge will earn the player up to three Dragon Eggs per speedway. As with the previous game, Hunter is hiding around in each speedway with a hidden challenge. The race is when you have to race against a group of characters from the speedway, such as pilots or giant butterflies. Time Attack is similar to the previous games, except gems are now earned instantaneously from destroying obstacles, and Spyro cannot add seconds to the timer. Each speedway is hosted by Sparx, and you are given the choice of the traditional Time Attack or a Race. In Year of the Dragon, the speedways are different. In Ripto's Rage!, speedways are similar to those of the first game, except each speedway has a secret Hunter challenge that can be completed for orbs, alongside gems. Spyro has 25-30 seconds to complete this task at the beginning of the flights, though each item collected will earn Spyro a few seconds extra. For each set, Spyro will earn 60 gems, and once all sets are completed in one go, Spyro will receive the remaining sixty gems for the flight, for a total of a possible 300 gems.
Spyro must fly around and destroy or activate all these obstacles by either flaming them or going through them.
In Spyro the Dragon, Speedways are called "Flights." There are four different obstacles per flight, and each obstacle comes in sets of eight.
